Tourism in the town of Veliki Preslav

 

A characteristic feature of the town of Veliki Preslav is the ecologically clean environ- ment, in combination with rich historical inheritance. The existence of game-hunting economy also contributes to the development of hunting tourism.

The preserved architecture of the houses in the nearby villages with tasting of the fine wines in the wine cellar of “Vinex-Preslav”. There is also a Wine association of wine tourism in the town, under the name of “Ancient capitals”, and the main office is also in the town. The Association is an nongovernmental organization and includes the north-eastern region of Bulgaria; members are the municipalities of Targovishte, Russe, Sliven, Novi Pazar.


Important places of interests are:

  • The National historic-archeological reserve “Veliki Preslav”, covering area of 50hectare, giving an idea of the famous ancient capital of Tsar Simeon, with its white-stone walls, richly decorated palaces and churches, vast and attractively planned architectural compositions, monastery and civil ensembles, workshops and ateliers, baths, water-main and necropolis;
  • The Archeological museum, with a rich exposition from the time of the First Bulgarian state, an unique gold treasure and the biggest collection of stamps on the Balkans, found at one place at a time, Old-Bulgarian inscriptions and symbols, painted pottery, ornamental sculpture, metal and plastic art, jewels, and tools;
  • The reserve “Patleina” and the reserve “Dervisha”, with the law-protected plants – the “Urumovo” yellow tulip, the horse-chestnut and the locust-tree. There are a number of trade spots, in help of the tourism, which offer foodstuffs, providing a possibility for lunch and dinner at the motel Omurtagov most” (the bridge of Khan Omurtagh).

The municipality has 968 hectares of protected areas, 48 hectares of which are reserves and buffer zones; national parks – 773 hectares and historical places of interest – 147 hectares. There can be seen small rodents, foxes, jackals, wild pigs, royal slag and forest birds in the nearby forests.
The town has three churches that are proclaimed to be cultural monuments.
